Cheap vs. Quality Filter Media: What's Actually Inside

Two master filters can look identical — same tank, same pipework, same install — and perform completely differently, because the difference is invisible: what's actually packed inside.

Cheap and generic OEM media is typically a coarse sand-and-gravel mix. It's inexpensive to source in bulk, which is why it shows up in low-cost Shopee listings and resold OEM units. Coarse media catches large particles but lets finer sediment through, and it clogs unevenly, which is why cheap filters lose pressure faster and need more frequent flushing.

Our proprietary media is fine-grain sediment sourced near the Ipoh river, specifically because it traps 50% more dirt than standard media and flushes cleaner — the finer grain doesn't compact into hard-to-clear clumps the way coarse gravel does. The catch: you genuinely can't tell the difference by looking at the tank from outside. The only way to know what you're buying is to ask, or to see the media itself before you commit — which is exactly why we show customers what's inside, not just what's outside.
